Not only can you taste an excellent coffee in Eje Cafetero, but you can also eat fantastically! Plump promise. There are many restaurants with traditional cuisine, where they serve exquisite and certainly abundant dishes. So choosing a bad one is a complicated task, but to hedge the shot, we’re going to tell you 5 restaurants to eat in the coffee region. Buckle up and get comfy because you’re going to put on some happy pounds:
1. Where Juan B.
I don’t know if it was because we arrived here exhausted and hungry after walking through the Cocora Valley, if the place is a gastronomic wonder, or both, what is clear is that we ate luxury!
The house’s specialty is trout (fried, smoked or with garlic), we decided on the latter, with prawns, and it was a success (don’t expect the typical ‘garlic’ style though because here the fish is flooded with a super tasty cream). We also ordered one steak delicious and super tender.
All dishes are accompanied by trout cream (free), also very rich. Total price with drinks for two: $82,000 Colombian pesos.
2. Choripaco
We discovered this place as it was next to Airbnb Saint Rose of Cabal and the host recommended it to us. Especially to try the typical local dish: sausages. Rober is a big fan, I’m not so I chose a tenderloin dish which was also very tasty. Rober confirms that the chorizos were to die for (although they are more like sausage than chorizo).
Total price with drinks for two: less than $30,000 Colombian pesos.
3. The oak
This was also another Airbnb host recommendation, but this time from Salento. Result: a ten! It’s a side of the road without much charm, but one of those full of truckers and locals, and we already know that if there are truckers it’s a sign of delicious food at a good price.
They specialize in sausages sweated or grilled and in drawers very, very, very abundant. I ordered one with grilled meat, rice, avocado, potatoes, cassava and beans and ugh, impossible to finish (luckily Rober helped me). He tried the sweaty chorizos and was very pleased.
Tip: try the local arepas, they are small but tough! Total price, with coke and beer for two: $33,500 Colombian pesos.
4. Balcony at Quindio
We ended up here by accident (we got caught in a storm on our way to Salento) and we decided to stop for lunch. MY MOM! What portions! we ordered some the ribs for the grill and one sanchocho, a typical soup. I’m not lying if I say it was at least 2 liters of soup (and meat, and sweet potatoes, cassava, potatoes) phew, it was impossible for us to finish it! All very rich.
The place is of a certain category, with very nice views, but completely accessible prices. In total, we paid $80,000 for everything Colombian pesos.
5. Saint Albert
More than eating, here you come to drink one of the best coffee in Colombia (or so they say). There is also a plus: the view Nice view and the surroundings full of vegetation and coffee fields. A wonder for the eyes (and the palate).
His thing would be to drink a red coffee (black), filtered by one of the traditional methods, but we did the tourist thing to drink some kind of oreo frapuccino hehe, very tasty ($11,000) Colombian pesos.
